The Australian Government has released a [...] policy that [...] mandates the ECMA-376 version of Microsoft's Office Open XML (OOXML) standard and productivity suites that can 'read and write' the .docx format, effectively locking the country's public servants into using Microsoft Office. The policy also appears to limit desktop operating systems to large, off-the-shelf commercial offerings at the expense of smaller distributions.

Physical meetings are the ISO way to exclude participation. Don't expect public online discussions on how HP and Microsoft will change the ISO rules for Fast Track. Mr ECMA has already been the responsible person to change the ISO Fast Track rules in 2006, remember?

A rejection means that the ISO 29500 could be published and set into effect unless further complaints are launched. Yet another possibility to study the way ISO works.

SC34 is on the way to try to keep the OOXML train going on, despite the appeals. When does OOXML will stop wasting the time of everybody? Hopefully SC34 and ISO runs on well paid volunteers.

ECMA rewriting the ISO Fast Track rules to better serve their customer has lead to the OOXML storm. Islands and desert nations were used to get the quota. Time for reform for the ISO dinosaur?
