Open XML translator - a PR stunt?
"Open XML Translator provides tools to build a technical bridge between the Open XML Formats and Open Document Format(ODF). As the first component of this initiative, the ODF Add-in for Microsoft Word 2007 allows to Open & Save ODF documents in Word.
As of 2007-05-21 06:56, this project is no longer under active development."

Open Formats with NDA?
At Linuxtag an office software developer from the Open Source community approached us. He was afraid to implement an OOXML filter as this required him to sign a non-disclosure agreement and he was afraid that his project could get tainted. Similar concerns are usually voiced in the context of reverse engineering. Some jurisdictions require persons to split reverse engineering from development tasks.

Comments
- There is absolutely no reason why the next MS-Office generation cannot support ISO 26300:2006, ODF or it successors as its default file format.
- OOXML is not backwards compatible to ISO 26300. The developers of OOXML where aware of the OpenDocument format.
- As OOXML is no open format the ECMA specification alone is insufficient for implementation. Developers of import filters need additional information from Microsoft and thus sign a non-disclosure agreement.
